Psychiatry

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. Psychiatrists are trained to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems, including disorders like substance use disorder and others.

Psychiatric Services We Offer:

Psychiatry is one of the few services offered at Compass Clinic that requires a doctor referral. Generally, your general practitioner is the person initiating this referral, as psychiatry assessment is a service covered through MSP. As a first step to get connected to a psychiatrist, we encouraged you to talk to your GP. Once a referral has been received by the clinic, we will contact you to book an appointment.

Consultation

You or your child’s consultation will let us learn more about you, your specific needs, and the best way we can help you.

N

Assessment

Here, we’ll assess you or your child’s psychiatric state using our in-depth panel. You or your child’s assessment is done by our professional psychiatry team, which may include psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, or speech and language pathologists.

N

Diagnosis

We’re very careful with our diagnoses. We take special care to provide in-depth assessments and diagnostic clarification before delivering any diagnoses, and make sure you and your child understand the many factors at play.

N

Treatment

Your child’s treatment will vary depending on the assessment and diagnosis. We will discuss the options and allow you to make an informed choice.

Education/Family Support

As a parent, you play a significant role in the treatment of your child. Since so much of their life is spent both at school and home, your family and educational settings may be having a profound impact on the way they think and feel. We’ll work with you to determine how to best optimize both environments for a healthier and happier life.

Therapy & Interventions

Therapy and interventions will be decided on based on you or your child’s ongoing assessment and may include:

  • Specific interventions based on you or your child’s diagnosis
  • Individual counselling
  • Group counselling
  • Medication management
  • School
  • School planning
  • Psycho-education
  • Family therapy
  • Family support groups
  • Treatment planning

The interventions provided to you, your child and your family are focused on the strategies that will be most effective in your home environment. Our consultations are detailed for a reason – we want to figure out everything that can possibly affect your psychiatric state, and offer the best course for treatment.

During Treatment

Psychiatric difficulties are almost never resolved immediately. The brain is complex, and oftentimes issues have deep roots that can take a lot of time and effort to unearth. Our goal is improvement – we want to see you or your child improve over. Over the course of your child’s many treatments with us, these incremental improvements will snowball into a pronounced change in mood, anxiety, and quality of life.
